Chapter Eighteen

Zade

I got Levi signed in and seated at the table on the dais for his first of the semi-final games with only two minutes to spare.

Levi seemed oddly calm after the emotional rollercoaster that we’d been on since starting our night, especially considering that the Alpha opposite him was nearly vibrating with anger. Whether it was at being kept waiting, at being forced to lower himself to playing against an Omega, or something else entirely, who the fuck knew?

“Can you stay here?” Levi asked, his voice back to its usual undemanding tone after his out of character pushiness back in our room. Right. The idiots in charge believed Omegas needed their Alpha close by to function. He tilted his head toward the extra chair that was provided at each of his games.

“You want me to, V?”

Instead of calling me out on the hated nickname, Levi nodded shyly, his eyes downcast and a faint blush on his cheeks. My gut clenched at the sight.

“Um, sure.” I settled into the chair, raising a curious brow at the asshat across the table who growled audibly at the delay. “What’s wrong, sunshine? We’re ready if you are.”

I was pretty sure that the cough that came from the Omega next to me as he reached out to make his first move was a stifled laugh.

Unlike most of the games that Levi had played leading up to the semi-finals, the game that he was engrossed in was far from an easy win. I wasn’t sure if he was distracted or if Alpha Asshat really was that good, but it seemed like we’d been sitting at the table for several hours. The moon had risen and was shining in through the window, calling to me. I was just wondering if I could distract Levi from the talk that we’d put off by suggesting a run in the park when he signaled the arbitrator that he needed a break.

Before I could rise to escort Levi wherever it was he needed to go, I found myself with a lap full of warm, sweet-smelling Omega. Levi buried his face in my neck and snuggled close.

“What’s wrong?” I asked in his ear, my protective instincts rearing up. I must have missed something while my mind was wandering. “Did that twat do something to you?”

“No, Alpha.” Levi’s lips brushed my neck as he sighed his answer. “I was just starting to feel stressed, so I asked for a break.”

“Um, so you needed a cuddle break?” I asked, unable to keep the confusion out of my voice.

“Uh huh. Is that okay?”

“Oh, well, yeah. Of course.” It had to be, right? That was one of the reasons that Omegas had to bring an Alpha with them. In case they needed..comfort. Fuck me.

Between Levi’s scent surrounding me and the weight of him against my body, my mind was quickly losing its claim on my blood supply. Add to that the wolf inside me that was chuffing contentedly, and I wasn’t even capable of deciding if Levi cuddling up in my lap in public was a problem or not.
